Miss. Chidinma Happiness was supposed to be a housekeeper, employed to cater for the domestic needs of a four-year-old baby. But her desire to be independent and rich led her into kidnapping the innocent child from Lagos to Imo State, where she struck a bargain of half a million naira for the transaction. Her desperation had since landed her in police net.

The Nigerian Compass gathered that Happiness, 28, from Imo State was a prostitute, who decided to take up the job, after she was contacted by one Mr. Kingsley, who introduced her to Mrs. Olabisi Okebanjo, who needed her service.

When Happiness came to Lagos, the terms of service was reached and the amount to be paid monthly to her was also agreed upon.

She resumed work and after three days, Happiness walked up to her boss that she could no longer continue and that she wanted to leave.

Mrs. Okebanjo claimed to have persuaded her to stay and to find out why she was leaving, but Happiness refused to advance any reason.

Okebanjo claimed that after Happiness left, she was still being seen on the streets, on a daily basis without making any attempt to visit her home.

She asked her what she was doing and where she was going but Happiness replied that she came to a home video rental shop to rent film.

After the conversation, the baby started crying insisting on following Happiness and she obliged, with an instruction that Happiness should return the baby on her way home.

Okebanjo said: “Happiness was my home help. I met her through a family friend called Kingsley. I had told Kingsley that I needed a home help and he promised to get me a very responsible person until he brought Happiness.

“We agreed on how much she will be receiving on a monthly basis. But to my greatest surprise, Happiness worked for only three days and told me that she wanted to leave. All efforts to change her mind to stay did not yield any result. I also tried to establish reasons why she wanted to leave but she refused to say a word.

“After three days, I was still seeing her around the street and I asked her what she was doing and she replied that she came to rent films.

“As we were about leaving, my baby started crying, that she wanted to follow Happiness. I allowed it, but begged Happiness to return the baby on her way home.’’

Okebanjo also told Nigerian Compass that she went to the video club to ask after her and the baby but she could not find them, hence she called Kingsley to inform him of the development before alerting the police.

A police source confirmed that the suspect was traced to her home town in Imo State, where they met with Happiness’ primary school teacher who assisted them with information on how to get her and where the baby could be found.

According to the teacher, Happiness told her that the baby was hers, and that her husband had abandoned them.

She requested for a motherless babies home where she could drop the baby. Hence, she was directed to one where they told her that someone needed a baby for adoption in Port Harcourt.

The Police spokesman, Frank Mba said: “When we got the report, we immediately dispatched our men to Happiness’ village to track her down. On getting there, my men met with her primary school teacher who after serious interrogation gave useful information on how to get her and the baby. The teacher directed the police to the motherless babies home where the official, Nnaemeka Irolo, confided in the police that the baby was sold to one of her clients in Port Harcourt at the sum of N500,000. The sum of N300,000 was for Happiness, while the teacher and Irolo shared N200,000.’’

The Nigerian Compass gathered that Irolo who facilitated the transaction did not use his office but did it independently.

The primary school teacher, who was identified as Comfort claimed not to have known that Happiness was not the mother of the baby she brought to her before she decided to assist her.

“When she came to meet me at Imo State, she told me that she had a four-year-old child and that the father of the baby abandoned them and she was looking for a motherless babies home to put the baby. I felt pity for her, especially the baby, because she was crying and I decided to assist her without going for further investigation.”

Happiness told the Nigerian Compass that she was a prostitute before she accepted to take up the job of a home help.

She said she never knew what came upon her. She confessed that she actually took the baby to Imo State and begged that she should be forgiven.
