Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC

September 30, 2010

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to congratulate the people of Nigeria on 50 years of independence.

On this occasion, we honor Nigeria’s history, its many accomplishments, its leadership not only in West Africa, but throughout the continent and the world. In particular, I want to applaud Nigeria’s role in bringing stability to places marked by conflict, through its significant contributions of peacekeeping forces.

Nigeria and the United States share a close partnership, which is reflected in the U.S-Nigeria Binational Commission that we launched this year. Through the Commission, our countries have deepened our cooperation on many issues, including good governance and transparency, energy, regional security, and advancing peace and development in the Niger Delta. Working together, we can achieve even greater progress.

This is a critical moment for Nigeria. Next year’s elections represent an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic roots while renewing your commitment to good governance and constitutional rule. As your partner and friend, the United States will support Nigerians in holding free, fair and credible elections in a peaceful environment. And we will continue to work with Nigeria to build a brighter future for the citizens of both our nations.

So, let me again wish all the people of Nigeria a well deserved, joyous, jubilee celebration.
