The Lagos State Government has uncovered an illegal brewery where all kinds of alcoholic drinks such Guinness, Star Lager, Williams, Wilfort beers and others are produced under unhygienic environment at Abibat Mogaji Model Market, Iponri, Lagos.
Officials of the Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Ministry led by the Commissioner, Prince Rotimi Agunsoye, stormed the market after a tip-off and discovered that the illegal beer factory was booming with all sorts of adulterated acoholic drinks being produced and sold to the public.
The illegal brewery is allegedly being operated by Mrs. Adeyinka Adeosun who claimed to be a beer depot owner.
She denied involvement in the illicit activities, in spite of owning stores full of different brands of beer found at the illegal brewery shops in the market.
Items recovered from the illegal brewery shop included brand new Guinness and Williams beer cocks, locally made cocking machine, Guinness gift items, liquid chemicals, large number of empty bottles and crates and three fake N500 notes.
Agunsoye advised the people to be wary of the kinds of beer they drink as fake beers could damage kidney, liver and other vital organs of the body. “When people take alcohol not properly brewed, it can cause a lot damage to the organs of the body, especially liver and kidney, so you see people dying prematurely. The state government will not condone any activities that will jeopardize the health of Lagosians let alone allowing operation of abattoir in any market apart from officially designated places in the state,” he said.
Agunsoye also frowned at the conversion of a Health Care Centre meant to serve the traders’ medical needs to toilets and refuse dump. He also expressed displeasure over the way toilets in the market meant to serve the traders and customers were converted to shops and illegal brewery.
