Nigerian singer and songwriter, Augustine ‘Tekno’ Kelechi has suggested that as a motion on reforming the Nigeria Police Force, the government should look into increasing their salary.

This is coming following the outrage and public protest against police brutality and harassment in the country.

Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Muhammad disbanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squads, SARs on Sunday, 11th October 2020.

Tekno however believes that police extortion is a result of the stipends they earn and hence, better pay would encourage contentment and a reason to stop extorting civilians. In a post via Twitter, the singer wrote, “Increase police salaries to 250k a month..”

Here is how Nigerian twitter users reacted to the suggestion;

Even if policemen are paid N1m per month minimum, they will still extort brutally because they can. How much salary is the IG receiving month, yet he is still corrupt, taking heavy bribes to pervert the course of justice.
In fact if they receive this proposed 250k minimum na so them go begin dey look the N100 roger wey dem dey collect now say e too small for their level say na N500 roger suit their new status. And they will brutally enforce the new roger. Salary increase is not the solution, it has been tried before. Solution is a total re-orientation of the police force. Big question is, is it possible?
