President Goodluck Jonathan is ready to pay any price to realize his presidential ambition in the 2011 general elections, Director General of the Goodluck/Sambo Campaign Organization, Ambassador Dalhatu Sarki Tafida declared yesterday in Kano. Ambassador Tafida, who led the Jonathan campaign train to the state, asked the party delegates to name their price for supporting the president. “Nigeria is the beautiful damsel which President Jonathan wants to marry. So, I want to know the bride’s guardian and how much dowry we should pay?” the immediate past Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom asked the delegates.

As a response to Tafida’s request, the delegates chorused the name of the former governor of the state and defense minister, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in unison, saying he was their linkman. Kwankwaso has openly endorsed Jonathan, saying that he is a credible person that should be elected.

The event took a dramatic twist, when the party leadership in the hall observed that the event proceeding, which was convened to endorse Jonathan secretly, was being recorded by some reporters.

This reporter and his colleague from the Leadership newspaper, Abdulaziz Ahmad Abdulaziz, who gained access to the hall, drew the ire of the party leaders when they realized that one of them (Abdulaziz) was recording the speech of Kwankwaso with his mobile phone. Suddenly, some security men and party thugs were asked to pick them up and later seized the gadget.

Despite identifying themselves as journalists to the party leaders, the journalists were bundled out of the venue. The thugs also took part of the brawl, saying the journalists were moles who were planted to report the endorsement to public. This reporter was kicked at his abdomen by a security official in the course of bundling him out of the venue.  However, it took Abdulaziz long before he retrieved his mobile phone from the securitymen.

Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the PDP, Barrister Faruk had earlier told Tafida at Alhaji Gauyama Hall (popularly known as Gidan Ganduje) that all Kano delegates were behind Jonathan and they were not changing their stance.

“Whoever told Mr. President that we are not with him is telling a lie. We can’t be deceived with ethnic blurs and religious sentiments. I once told the president that we will deliver Kano delegates to him. And we will surely fulfill the promise. Whoever says Jonathan is not winning, he should know that he is not God,” the PDP chairman said.

He said the party gathered all the national delegates in the hall in order to show the president that they were behind him. “Before me here are all the delegates and they pledged their support to Goodluck/Sambo ticket,” said Barrister Iya.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Kano Correspondent Chapel, Bala Abdullahi, said the chapel would no longer tolerate dishonorable treatment of its members. He said they would write the party leadership on the matter.
