A Divisional Police officer (DPO) in Aba, Abia State, who allegedly raped a lady, one Chinasa Peer Uwakwe, to death inside his office and was subsequently arrested, is alleged to be employing all dirty tactics to get out of the mess he put himself into.
Daily Sun gathered that immediately the bubble burst, the police officer allegedly sent messages to some of his superiors in the state, informing them of Uwakwe’s death in his office which he, however, attributed to complications arising from over dose of a supposed hard drug.

The DPO, a day after the incident, was said to have instructed one of his officers, simply to plant some hard drugs in the bag of the late lady which was left behind in his office when the woman was rushed to the hospital. This much was reportedly collaborated by a younger sister (name witheld) of the deceased, who also alleged threats to her life.

According to her, “to cover up his evil deed and make people to believe that my sister died as a result of over dose of hard drugs, the DPO instructed one of his officers, (name witheld), to plant some hard drugs in her handbag.

“This is ridiculous. It was the same DPO who, when some of my relations went to see him to find out what happened, ‘poured’ out the contents of my sister’s handbag and not even a pain killer drug was found. He cannot now claim that some hard drugs were discovered in her handbag. If they think because she is dead and cannot come to defend herself; ... Well God is watching.

“Again, this contradicts what the patrol team, led by one Inspector (name witheld), who took my sister to hospital told doctors at the New Era Hospital. They told the doctors that my sister had problems arising from excessive alcohol. All these are wide lies, my sister was drugged and raped to death. I challenge the police to make their investigations open.

“I have been receiving telephone calls warning me that if I do not desist from publicity I have caused the incident to attract, that I will go the way of my sister.”
Although the DPO had been arrested and taken to Umuahia for interrogation as confirmed by Mr. Geoffery Ogbonna, PPRO, Abia State Command, but she was doubtful of thorough investigation in the matter: “I am using this medium to ask the Federal Government to look into the matter now as my life and that of my family members are under serious threat.”

Meanwhile, two rights groups, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) had shown interest in the matter.
Mr. R. Iheme of the Investigations Department, South-east zone of NHRC, Enugu, while commending Daily Sun for its untiring efforts in exposing the ills in the society, pledged the intervention of the body in the matter. He stated that soon his members would visit Aba to carry out an independent investigation into the matter.
CLO Abia State chapter in a letter to the Inspector General of Police and signed by its chairman, Charles Ekeh, a copy of which was made available to Daily Sun, called for a thorough investigation into the matter to determine the role played by the patrol team that took the dying lady to the hospital.
