Former head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has lamented the increasing spate of brigandage, social unrests and criminality in the country, noting that the trend is antithetical to the nation’s march to economic and technological greatness. The former Nigeria’s military leader spoke on Monday in Kano, at the launch of the Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau Foundation, which took place at the Sani Abacha Stadium in the state.

According to him, “the existing scenario of teeming youths in our population, who are overbearing for their parents to take proper care of them, coupled with, sometimes, greedy or overzealous men and women in the society, who are bent on exploiting the situation for their selfish gains, must be reversed.”
He maintained that endowment funds such as the one they were launching was one of the few philanthropic gestures through which the society could address these social ills that had held it hostage, by providing scholarship to those who were willing but were not financially able to learn.

While applauding the initiative of the Kano State governor for launching the foundation in his name, he said the governor was telling the people that it was not only the government that had the responsibility of making life better for everyone, urging other to thread similar paths.
In his remark, the Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, noted that the Foundation would help in the provision of the minimum facilities of life to orphans, widows and the less privileged members of the state.

Shekarau described the foundation, which had Imam Abubakar Galadanchi as the chairman of its Board of Trustees, as an effort to lift the vulnerable members of the society to reach their ambition by helping them acquire the right education and the skills for them to live a useful life.
The governor thanked the former head of state for his interest in the foundation and also thanked the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, for his endeavour to help rid Kano society of the woes that impedes its overall progress and development
