Rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, and other activists in Abuja who were carrying out a peaceful procession to mark the New Year have been arrested by Nigerian security forces.
Eyewitnesses say policemen suspected to be with the Rapid Response Squad stormed Gudu junction in Abuja, swarmed on Sowore before carting him away with other activists at the location.
Sowore, an Amnesty International designated Prisoner of Conscience, had earlier in the day called for concerned Nigerians to join the march against bad governance to mark the new year.
It comes a year after Sowore was released from the custody of the Department of State Security over his #RevolutionNow protests against the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
