More than 3,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State, on Saturday defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria.

The PDP members were Ied by Chief Richard Izegaegbe. He described the move as a formidable and astute political strategy. They were drawn from wards eight and nine in Owan East Local Government area of the state.

Izegaegbe said during the formal declaration for ACN that he took the decision, alongside his supporters, as a result of the developmental strides of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

‘’It is only a selfish politician, who is not cut out for service to his people that will not want to be associated with developments,” he said.

Izegaegbe cited the massive road construction across the state; youth employment; inauguration of the 100 air-conditioned intra city buses; renovation and unveiling of the astro turf at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium as some of the laudable achievements of the Oshiomhole-led administration within a spate of two years.

Izegaegbe, who described the PDP as a directionless party fraught with division, acrimony and godfatherism, said he decided to join the “progressives than remain with the conservatives.”

He, however, cautioned that the ACN must work together to score 100 per cent success in the forthcoming elections, stressing that “we have only come to join forces with the ACN to ensure that we realise 100 per cent victory in the forthcoming elections.”

While promising to further deplete what is left of the PDP, Izegaegbe expressed gratitude to God for making the declaration a reality.

Receiving the defector, on behalf of the governor, at Oluma Town Hall, Otuo, venue of the declaration, the Secretary to the Edo State Government, Mr. Pally Iriase, commended Izegaegbe and his followers for their vision, assuring them of equal opportunities in the ACN.

“That you have today, decided to join the progressive party, I want to assure you that we have all become equal stakeholders as there are no new joiners in the ACN,” he explained.
