A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, has sentenced a National Diploma II student of the Department of Public Administration, Kogi State Polytechnic, Shehu Mohammed, to eight years’ imprisonment for illegal possession of a firearm and unlawful association.

The judge, Justice Tenimu Mohammed, convicted the student after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

The prosecution counsel, Samuel Ikutanwa, had asked that the charges be read to the accused person, who instantly pleaded guilty to them.

Security operatives of the Kogi State Polytechnic had arrested Mohammed for being in possession of a locally-fabricated pistol.

Mohammed, with matriculation number 2018/ND/PAD/170, was also caught carrying five rounds of live ammunition while making his way through the main entrance of the polytechnic on Friday, April 9, 2021.

The sentence is not pure legal procedure, possessing fire arm without crime cannot amount to eight years imprisonment, it could be possession for self defence following what is happening in Nigeria. The boy does not deserve 8 years, review that case
