The much-canvassed Army/civilian relationship may have suffered a set- back in Kaduna.
This was because an Army officer, Major A. H Ibrahim of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) was alleged to have engaged two civilians in a fisticuff, punched them on the faces and subjected them to frog-jump for ‘trespassing’ on a disputed plot of land in Ungwan Rimi area of Kaduna metropolis.

The two civilians, Joefex Gbadago and Emmanuel Eze, both civil engineers, narrated their ordeal to Daily Sun, saying that they had gone to the plot of land situated on number 005/006A and 006/006B, Pariya road in Ungwan Rimi on Saturday morning based on a court order, “that the defendants shall grant unfettered access to the plaintiffs to the said plots as prayed.”
Both Gbadago and Eze who worked for the plaintiffs, Jerry Musa and Achigu Esuga alleged that they were heavily punched on the faces by Major Ibrahim who was said to be fully dressed in Army camouflage uniform at the time of the incident.

They further alleged that after receiving the punches, the Army officer also subjected them to frog-jump where upon he (Army officer) was said to have immediately called a detachment of Army personnel attached to the Kaduna State security outfit, Operation Yaki, who arrived at the scene and allegedly joined in beating them. They also told Daily Sun that it took the intervention of a supplier of building materials, an elderly man simply called Sani who spoke to the Major in Hausa language on the issue before he released the two engineers with an alleged warning, “ if you come back here again, I will kill you.”

According to the court order dated November 11, 2010 with suit no:KDC/922 /2010 by the High Court of Justice of Kaduna State which was made available to Daily Sun, Major A.H Ibrahim and Mallam A. Jibrin are jointly defending the said disputed land just as the case had been adjourned to November 18, 2010 for the motion on notice.

Engineer Gbadago gave an account of what the Major did to him and engineer Eze, saying, “on getting to the site we met one man at the gate and we showed him the court order so that he can allow us to enter, but he refused, and said if we don’t want trouble we should go or he will call Major Ibrahim.

“While we were still talking, he called Major Ibrahim on phone, and before we know it, the Major came. “He asked, who gave us the paper to enter the plot of land, and I showed him the paper. He made to read it, but changed his mind and threw it back at me.
“He said we should leave the place immediately otherwise he will deal with us. As we were about leaving, he phoned the Operation Yaki men, and about eight of them came and surrounded us.

“He ordered them to beat us but the Operation Yaki men were reluctant to do that, but before I knew it, the Major punched my face, while one of the Operation Yaki soldier was attached to Eze, and that one frog-jumped him. “The more I complained, the more the Major punched my face, forcing me to come down from my vehicle. I told him that I am older than him, why is he maltreating me.
“He gave me another blow, saying that it is because I am older that he was doing that to me. He was in camouflage Army uniform on that day.

“But when Alhaji Sani came closer and started speaking Hausa language to the Major and the operation yaki men, they now said we should go.” However, when contacted on his mobile phone, Major Ibrahim simply said, “ordinarily, I don’t talk to the press, but because I have regard for The Sun for the past years, that is why I am speaking to you. My training in the Army did not permit me to fight civilians. I bought a land and some people are trying to claim it with fake documents.

“I did not call the Operation Yaki as they are claiming because I know the law, and I have not been served the court order.”
Meanwhile, the counsel for the Plaintiffs, Chris Ubogu said he would file a fresh case against the Army officer for assaulting the site engineers even as he added that he would unravel the men of the Operation Yaki, “ that were used to dehumanize the innocent civilians.”
