British Lawmaker, Sir David Amess has been killed during his constituency meeting at a church in Essex, South-East England.

Sir David Amess was stabbed multiple times by a knifeman who attacked him while holding a constituency meeting today.

Reports by British media said the knifeman ran into the church building, wielding a knife before attacking the 69-year-old politician who represents Southend West.

Horrified constituents waiting to see him and staff witnessed the stabbing and quickly called police who rushed to the scene, Mail Online reported.

In a statement on Friday,  Essex police confirmed the incident, adding that a 25-year-old man was arrested in connection to the murder.

The statement reads:
Quote
“We are now in a position to confirm the man who died in Leigh-on-Sea today was Sir David Amess MP.

“We were called to an address in Eastwood Road North shortly after 12.05pm today (Friday 15 October) to reports Mr Amess, 69, had been stabbed.

“Despite the best efforts of paramedics, sadly, he died at the scene.

“A 25 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody.

“We have recovered a knife from the scene and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

We are continuing to appeal for anyone who saw anything or has CCTV, dash cam or doorbell footage to come forward.

“We want to say thank you to the members of the public who alerted so quickly.

“We need anyone who saw anything or has CCTV, dash cam or doorbell footage to contact us.

Sir David Amess is the second sitting MP to be killed in the last five years, following the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016.

She was killed outside a library in Birstall, West Yorkshire, where she was due to hold a constituency surgery.

Amess was a well-known backbencher who during his 38 years in parliament campaigned on issues including animal rights.

Raised as a Roman Catholic, David Amess was first elected in 1983 as the MP for Basildon. He was married with five children.
