Lagos Businesswoman, Faustina Okonkwu Sent To Prison Over Alleged N4.6m Visa Scam

The Police at the Zone 2 Command, Lagos Island, Lagos have arrested a Lagos Island female Visa agent, Faustina Okonkwu and arraigned her before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly obtaining the sum of N4, 690, 000 from Adeyanju Olawumi Tijani under false pretence.

The police said Okonkwu allegedly collected the money from the complainant with the promise to procure Canadian Visa for him to travel abroad but that instead she allegedly converted the money to her use and escaped.

Police further alleged that following the development, the complainant petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, Bode Adeyinka Adeleke who directed his men led by Supol Isreal Adejoh to fish out the defendant anywhere she could be found.

The Police team, after days of intelligence gathering tracked her to a hide out and arrested her.

Okonkwu, a resident of Sura area of Lagos Island, Lagos was charged before the Tinubu Magistrate Court, Lagos on a four-Court charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence, stealing and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

Police prosecuting counsel, Francis Igbinosa informed the court in the charge marked Q/03/2022 that the defendant committed the offence in 2021 in Lagos.

Igbinosa told the Court that the defendant tricked the complainant and collected the sum of N4, 690, 000 from him with the promise to procure a Canadian visa for him, but that the defendant instead converted the money to her use and escaped before she was arrested.

Igbinosa said the offences, the defendant committed were punishable under sections 325(1), 314(1) (a), 287 and 168d of the Criminal law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences and Magistrate, O.S Abioye granted her N500, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum

Abioye adjouned the case till 22 February, 2022 for mention and ordered that the defendant be detained at the Kirikiri correctional facility Apapa, Lagos till she perfected the bail conditions.
