A female student of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Ekere Itoro, was crushed on Tuesday, while two other people suffered injuries in a hit-and-run motor accident in Oshodi area of Lagos State.

In another incident, a policeman at Amukoko area of Lagos allegedly shot another man thus throwing the neighbourhood into confusion.

Eye witnesses in the Oshodi incident said the accident which occurred around 8am involved a mini tanker with registration number XT 343 EPE.

Our correspondents gathered that the truck allegedly suffered a break failure and the driver subsequently lost control. The truck hit Itoro, who was said to be on industrial attachment with a confectionary company along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. She died on the way to hospital.

According to witnesses’ accounts, immediately the accident occurred, the driver, identified as Ugochukwu Okolie, jumped down and took to his heels. The truck which was still in motion consequently rammed into other cars.

“One driver of Volkswagen Golf with registration number BV 470 FST; I think his name is Oke Lukman, suffered fractured legs. A Volvo (BE 33 MUS) and a Volks Passat (BK 612) were also badly damaged,” a witness who identified himself simply as Anthony said.

It was gathered that another pedestrian, Chizoba Anileka also suffered fractures in his legs.

In the Amukoko incident, it was gathered that policemen who were responding to a distress call in the area were suddenly attacked by the youths of the area. The cause of the attack was not known, but witnesses said the youths might be venting their anger on the policemen.

Our correspondents gathered that the policemen started shooting in a bid to escape the youths’ wrath. One of the bullets hit a man identified as Mukaila Sanni, who died on the spot.

The action of the policemen angered the youths who went on rampage, causing confusion and panic in the area.

Spokesman of the Lagos State police command, Frank Mba, said that the driver in the Oshodi incident had been arrested and assisting the police in their investigation. “The wounded are receiving treatment in the hospital,” he said.

Mba added that two policemen were being detained over the Amukoko incident. “We are investigating to determine the actual shooter,” he said.
