The Nigerian Army has dismissed two soldiers who murdered a renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Goni Aisami, after helping them with a free ride in Yobe state.
Recall, Sheikh Goni who was on his way from Kano State to his base in Gashua town in Yobe State, was murdered on Friday, August 19, 2022, by the soldiers after giving them a lift from Nguru military check-point to Jaji-maji, a nearby community under Karasuwa Local Government.
Jajimaji is a small village that is a distance of less than 30 kilometers away from Gashua, the hometown of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
According to reports, he was shot dead three times while his car, a red Honda Accord 2006 model, was taken away by the assailants around 9:00 p.m. The car however recovered after the suspects were arrested by the police.
The renowned Islamic scholar was buried on Saturday evening, August 20, 2022, in Gashua amid tears by thousands of his students, family members as well as associates.
Following the cry for justice by Nigerians, the Yobe State Police Command was said to have arrested the two Nigerian soldiers.
In the latest development, on Saturday, August 27, 2022, the Army has confirmed the dismissal of the soldiers over the murder of the Yobe-based scholar.
The acting commander officer in charge of 241 Reece battalion, Nguru, Yobe State, Lt Col. Ibrahim Osabo, told journalists a joint board of inquiry set up in collaboration with the police had found them guilty.
The dismissed soldiers include Lance Corporal John Gabriel and Lance Corporal Adamu Gideon.
He said the two soldiers were dismissed on a two-count charge of failure to perform duties and conduct prejudice to service discipline.
Lt Col Osabo added that the dismissed soldiers will be handed over to the police in Damaturu for prosecution in court of law.
