A new biography by Prince Philip’s friend Gyles Brandreth has claimed that the late Queen Elizabeth II had cancer in the final year of her life.
Gyles, who is a regular guest on ‘This Morning’ show monitored by MyLondon newspaper, said her Majesty had a form of bone marrow cancer.
In the book ‘Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait’, he claimed the monarch had myeloma despite the fact her death certificate, which was released in September, recorded her cause of death as ‘old age’, the newspaper quoted a report.
“I had heard that the Queen had a form of myeloma — bone marrow cancer — which would explain her tiredness and weight loss and those ‘mobility issues’ we were often told about during the last year or so of her life,” Gyles is said to have written in the book.
Pain in the lower back and pelvis is said to be the most common symptom of the disease which often affects elderly people.
Gyles also claimed that there is currently no known cure, but only treatment to help regulate the immune system and “drugs that help prevent the weakening of the bones”.
He added that the drugs could reduce the severity of its symptoms and extend the patient’s survival by months or a few years.
The biography is said to have also stated that “the late Queen was stoic in her final months, having told her lady-in-waiting that she wanted to keep busy. She reportedly wanted to have lots of royal engagements to help her cope with the grief of Prince Philip’s death.”
