Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has charged Nigerians and other Africans to fight against monopolistic style of democracy.

Ezekwesili made the call at the Office Of The Citizen (OOTC) inauguration by #FixPolitics, an organization she founded.

The ex-Vice President of the World Bank (Africa) noted that there has been a phenomenal shift in political engagement.

Ezekwesili defined monopolistic democracy as a situation similar to a marketplace monopoly and urged citizens to actively participate in governance.

The pioneer Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) lamented that oligopoly exists in Nigeria and some African countries.

The activist said the apathy and less show of concern by the people are what made the political class to monopolise democracy.

“The reason we have monopolistic democracy is because we have citizens that cannot engage.

“What we are doing today is to further accentuate the quality of engagement citizens must have to break democracy from being a monopoly to truly competitive.

“A competitive democracy is what leads to better quality governance. We now know that without quality governance, we are not going anywhere,” Ezekwesili stressed.

The Africans r still mainly dueling in the their past experiences with millitary regime . I would simply say it’s the martial law syndrome that has been enforced to suppress almost all African nation in the 70.80 and until the late 90s, this trend of autocratic dictatorship regime modeled African into accepting whatever and majority and I mean the good majority have been subjected to a daily struggle to only think about survival but not about governance or leadership interest .This trend later transcend into the democratic system after a long oppressive regime .Therefore, people have become so disconnected with leadership and the system which governs them .African elite have been successful in using this iron fist style of militia government to take away the fundamental rights of the people .Give them a bag of rice to vote or hand them 100 notes naira to sell their national treasures to politicians . U see madam , it has to start from grassroots orientation. Africans should adopt rights of humanity and enshrined rights into the academic curriculum from elementary level to tertiary level.
