Twin bomb blasts occurred in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Wednesday just as Britain and Russia joined the international community in flaying the Christmas eve attacks in Plateau and Borno states.

No deaths were recorded in the blasts, which were confirmed by the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Aliyu Musa.

Before the news of the Yenagoa blasts spread, there were reports that members of an Islamic fundamentalist group, the Jama’atu Alhlus-Sunnah Lidda’Awati Wal Jihad, had shot three people dead in an hospital in Maiduguri on Tuesday night.

Another blast in Bakin Ladi near Jos on Tuesday was, however, a subject of controversy as the police denounced reports on the incident as untrue.

While the reports on Wednesday had it that a bomb exploded killing the bearer before he could reach his target, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, Mr. Abdulramman Akano, said a device used for an experiment by a secondary school teacher exploded.

An Islamic Fundamentalist group, Jama’atu Alhlus–Sunnah Lidda’Awati Alhlus-Sunnah Lidda’Awati wal Jihad, had on Monday claimed responsibility for the Jos multiple bombings in which more than 80 people were confirmed dead and over 100 others injured.

An international news agency, Reuters, had reported on Wednesday that one of the Yenagoa bombings took place where a governorship aspirant, Mr. Beemo Seiff, was holding a rally.

The State Police Commissioner who described the devices as dynamite, also confirmed that a number of people who were injured were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

“It was dynamite planted at the venue earlier by people who are still at large. We are investigating,” Musa said, adding that, “the aim of the people responsible was to stop the rally.”

But Reuters and Musa were silent on where the second explosion took place.

Reuters had also on Wednesday added that one of the three people killed by Jama’atu Alhlus-Sunnah Lidda’Awati Wal Jihad in Maiduguri was a senior policeman.

It quoted the spokesman of the Police in Borno State as saying that investigations into the shooting had commenced.

“An investigation has already commenced but I can tell you that we believe the killings must have been carried out by a fundamentalist group since it was its mode of operations,” a policeman said.

In Jos, the Commissioner of Police said a teacher, Abubakar Musa, was injured at the Islamic Orientation Secondary School, Barkin Ladi while conducting an experiment with his students. However, our correspondent said since Tuesday was a public holiday, all schools in the state had been closed and no experiment could have taken place in any of the schools.

Meanwhile, the British and Russian governments have condoled with the Federal Government over Jos bomb blasts and the attacks in Maiduguri.

Britain, in a statement by the Press Secretary of its High Commission in Nigeria, Mr. Hooman Nouruzi, expressed deepest condolences to the families of all the victims.

It implored the Federal Government to restore peace in the state and bring the perpetrators of the blasts to justice.

“It is important that security and calm be restored and maintained for the benefit of all citizens and that the perpetrators of the acts of violence as well as those responsible should be investigated and brought to justice,” Nouruzi quoted the High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Bob Dewar, as saying.

The statement reads, “The British High Commissioner, Bob Dewar, has condemned the violence in Jos and Maiduguri over the Christmas period and expressed deepest condolences to the families of all the innocent people who died or were injured.

“He said it was important that security and calm be restored and maintained for the benefit of all citizens and that the perpetrators of the acts of violence as well as those responsible should be investigated and brought to justice.”

Also on Wednesday, the Jama‘atu Nasril Islam appealed to the Federal Government to fish out all those involved in the Jos bomb blasts.

The JNI, in a statement by its Secretary-General, Dr Khalid Abubakar, condemned the act and called for calm in the state.

“JNI, under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa‘ad Abubakar III, hereby condemned in strong terms, the ugly occurrence of crisis in Jos,” the statement added.

It stated that the situation in the state had become worrisome after a series of committed efforts to bring peace and harmony to the state.

Russian President Dimtri Medvedev said in a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan that he received the news of the blasts and the attack with sorrow.

“I learnt about the blasts in Jos and the attack in Maiduguri, which so unfortunately caused the death of many victims,” he said.

He stated that the “ offences, which assaulted your esteemed country once again prove the necessity to increase international efforts in fighting terrorist threats.”

The Russian president assured the Federal Government of its support and cooperation.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the Joint Special Task Force, Capt. Charles Ekeocha, has said allegations of bias against soldiers keeping the peace in Jos are not fair.

“A lot of sacrifice is involved in keeping the peace, the security men are doing their utmost best; the allegation of bias against them is most unfair,’’ Ekeocha told NAN on Wednesday.

There have been allegations that the security personnel, particularly the soldiers, have taken sides in the conflict.

But Ekeocha, who reacted, described the allegations as “unfortunate and totally out of place.’.

Ekeocha said that it was not possible for soldiers to take sides in view of their training in the handling of such situations.

Work and commercial activities however resumed in Jos on Wednesday.

At the Federal and state secretariats in the crisis-torn capital, workers and vehicles were frisked by security guards before being allowed into the complexes.

Most banks, restaurants and shops were also opened to customers as residents showed signs of putting the ugly incidents behind them. Only a few banks like Diamond, Guaranty Trust, Stanbic and UBA, located in the city centre, remained shut.

At the Federal Secretariat, a security guard told the News Agency of Nigeria that they were instructed to search everyone entering the complex as a security measure.

“You must be aware that there is tension in town following the bomb blasts. That is why we are trying to ensure that such act does not occur here,” he said.

At one of the banks that did not open , a customer told NAN that he needed some money to enable him “to get some things done,” since he had spend all the cash that he had during the holidays.
