The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has refused to react to allegations that he worked under Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State as the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). This followed the conduct of the general elections with many questioning INEC for not following the law.

The allegation was made by former Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. Amaechi alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers, Tonye Cole, was contesting against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, INEC, and security agencies.

The former minister also claimed that Yakubu was nominated for reappointment as INEC chairman by an individual in the camp of Bola Tinubu, the president-elect. The former governor of Rivers made the allegations while speaking with reporters in his polling unit after voting in last Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections. However, Yakubu has yet to confirm or deny the allegations through his spokesman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, days after they were made. Also, the Commission’s spokesman, Festus Okoye has not issued any statement regarding the claims.
