Notable Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie criticized the US and the UK for congratulating Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite the flawed elections.
Adichie wrote an open letter to US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, citing reports of widespread violence, ballot box snatching, voter intimidation, and other electoral malpractices that occurred during the February 25 poll.

In an article published in The Atlantic on Thursday, Adichie also mentioned that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to fulfil its promise to upload election results from polling units in real-time via its result viewing portal.

Chimamanda noted that the congratulatory statement from the US State Department itself acknowledged that Nigerians were frustrated with the flawed process. She urged Biden and Rishi not to endorse the results of an undemocratic process and to take action towards the current state of Nigeria.

Chimamanda Adichie’s Open Letter to US Biden and UK’s Rishi

Quote
“How surprising then to see the U.S. State Department congratulate Tinubu on March 1. ‘We understand that many Nigerians and some of the parties have expressed frustration about the manner in which the process was conducted and the shortcomings of technical elements that were used for the first time in a presidential election cycle.

“And yet the process was described as a “competitive election” that “represents a new period for Nigerian politics and democracy.”

“American intelligence surely cannot be so inept. A little homework and they would know what is manifestly obvious to me and so many others: The process was imperilled not by technical shortcomings but by deliberate manipulation.

“I hope, President Biden, that you do not personally share this cordial condescension. You have spoken of the importance of a “global community for democracy,” and the need to stand up for “justice and the rule of law.”

“A global community for democracy cannot thrive in the face of apathy from its most powerful member. Why would the United States, which prioritizes the rule of law, endorse a president-elect who has emerged from an unlawful process?

“I hope it will not surprise you, President Biden, if I argue that the American response to the Nigerian election also bears the faint taint of that word, compromised, because it is so removed from the actual situation in Nigeria as to be disingenuous.

“Has the United States once again decided that what matters in Africa is not democracy but stability? (Perhaps you could tell British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who quickly congratulated Tinubu, that an illegitimate government in a country full of frustrated young people does not portend stability.)

“Or is it about that ever-effulgent nemesis China, as so much of U.S. foreign policy now invariably seems to be? The battle for influence in Africa will not be won by supporting the same undemocratic processes for which China is criticized.”

So. The description of a free and fair plus credible  election in Nigeria is if Peter Obi had been allowed to win in the same circumstances?
Stories such as this is causing big division amongst the major ethnic groups in Nigeria.

Regardless of anyone’s personal feelings and preference, the election has produced a winner who will be sworn in on the 29th of May in accordance with the laws of this country and the democratic norms we have kept since 1999 when we won back our freedom after years of bloody struggle.

“It is totally unbecoming for somebody to risk all of that just because his wet dream of seizing power was denied by the majority of Nigerians and for him to feel emboldened to go on television to spread inciting and seditious comments.

“This cannot just end at words; we must take action to ensure that there is never a repeat of such thoughtless action capable of throwing our country into chaos.

You will explain better in your poetry the meaning of ''unlawful process'' is it a process where an independent body conducted an election and declare the winner as stipulated by law or a process that gave opposition the victory in Lagos for over 20 years.

So pathetic you are even insinuating Africa to be a modern slave under the influence of USA at the expense of China, We need freedom and prosperity for Nigeria and Africa as a whole under the leadership of Asiwaju

It is unfortunate that some commentators have deliberately decided to close their eyes or shun every sense of reason to the fact that INEC failure to upload results directly to his portal as earlier agreed was a violation of law and trust of  Nigerian imposed on her. This should be a matter of concern to all interested in the democratic stability of  Nigeria

I still don't understand why some people are baking their argument on the fact INEC dud not transmit the result on their portal for everyone to see.
INEC are not under any legislative obligation to do so. They could decide to change their tactics at anytime.
If INEC had gonecagead with this transmission. Some hackers have got their tools ready to hijack this transmission and send out fake results that'll favour them. Hence reason Dino Melaye was frothing in the mouth in front of INEC chairman.  All he was persistently asking was "But you promised to transmit the result live, why did you changed your decision"
He knew INEC has foiled their plan. If you as a combatant batallion leader was heading to a war.  Suddenly you were informed the enemies are laying ambush somewhere fir your troops. Would you change your route and tactics or stupidly carry on and lead your team on the same dangerous route?

Well written. About time someone wrote to these world leaders. The truth is EVERYONE know that the only reason INEC did not upload result in real time was because they had to rig the election for Tinubu to be SELECTED. It’s not something new for INEC. Rigging has been the norm but this time they did not expect this type of scrutiny and people calling them out. They taught by now everyone must have forgotten about it and moved on but it seems like everyday their selected winner and INEC is kept uneasy and people calling out their broad day light robbery won’t just go away.
Tinubu did not win this election. Even his supporters know that like day and night or they chose to close their eyes to the truth. Which is their choice. INEC chairman and Tinubu know what happened. The rigging was too obvious. So many proof of rigging all over the place. It’s not about OBI winning. It’s about people’s vote reflecting but it did. If INEC chose not to upload result then what about written figure manipulations, ballot snatching, thuggery and voter’s intimidation. I know one day that this animals politicians put out their against their opponents will turn against them and destroy them entirely.

When robbery/stealing is in their bloodstreams then calling o seeing this election as a fraud is hurting to their ears.

They have robbed their way through life and when truth is called out they say it’s electoral failure. Was this electoral failure or electoral robbery. How do you even begin to arrest, convict arm robbery, criminals and kidnappers when you even robbed others to get to where you are in life.
