A faction led by Senator Lekan Balogun of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has approached a Federal High Court in Ibadan, seeking to stop the gubernatorial primary of the party slated for today in Ibadan.

The suit, filed on Tuesday, had 37 members of the party as claimants/applicants, while the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC); the PDP; state chairman of the party, Mr Dejo Afolabi and the state governor were listed as defendants.

In their statement of claim, signed by Mr Michael Lana and Chief Lowo Obisesan, the claimants averred that the state PDP had no substantive executive committee, as a result of crisis which besieged it in 2008.

They said the state PDP, in compliance with a directive from the national leadership of the party, held a kangaroo congress in which members of other factions of the party were excluded.

They, therefore, prayed the court for a declaration that there was no valid congress of the state PDP at the ward, local government and state levels, which could elect its gubernatorial and other candidates for the forthcoming general election.

Answering questions from newsmen in court, a leading member of the faction, Elder Wole Oyelese, said they were in court to challenge the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, which recently approved the list of new state executives put in place by the Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala faction of the party.

Reacting to the suit, Governor Alao-Akala said the primary would go on without any hitch.

The statement urged all the delegates to report at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, on schedule and feel free to vote for the candidates of their choice.
