In sad mood, Super Falcons’ veteran striker, Desire Oparanozie has apologised to Nigerians after failing to beat ten-woman Lionesses of England in the round of 16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
In a post she shared on her Twitter handle, she said “Sad day! Very disappointing to have lost through penalties, and even more disappointing not to have converted mine. And for this I deeply apologise.”
Oparanozie who came into the field during extra time, took Nigeria’s first penalty and missing her kick.
The match which had lasted for over 120 minutes after 90 minutes of regular football and 30 minutes of extra-time ended at 0-0 for both teams and had to be settled via penalties.
England, however, went on to score all their subsequent spot kicks, but Super Falcons’ second spot-kick taker, Michelle Alozie also failed to score her kick.
This led to the Super Falcons ending their promising run at the 2023 Women’s World Cup with 4-2 on penalties.
In reaction to her tweet, Nigerians have chosen to encourage the striker with comforting words and also congratulatory messages.
Also, Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie said “So sad not to have qualified for the next round , we gave our all . Super proud of this team, we will come back better and stronger. Thank you all for your love and support.”
