It was observed that prospective voters in some polling units in the state are refusing to submit their thumbprints in order to avoid the tardiness of INEC’s scanners in capturing thumbprints.
Addressing journalists in Kano yesterday, the electoral commissioner said INEC had decided to withdraw the cards because they did not meet the stipulated requirements of data needed from prospective voters.
According to him, cases of registering without thumbprints were recorded in some polling units across the state. He explained that new software that improves the scanners’ speed had been configured, and so the problem of delay had already been solved.
He said some of their staff who were found wanting by skipping the registration process had been reprimanded. “Some of our staff are guilty of registering people without scanning their thumbprints, which is an important part of the registration process. So we warned them not to do so again,” he said.
While urging people who registered without tendering their fingerprints to submit their cards for reissuance, he said the commission had embarked on sensitization campaigns in the media in order to enlighten them on how to register properly.
