The Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umar Radda, has advocated for Nigerians to be given access to buy weapons such as AK-47s and RPGs to protect themselves.

The governor argued that if bandits could have free access to deadly weapons, which they use to terrorise the citizens, ordinary Nigerians should equally have the same leverage to ensure their protection.

Radda also wants Nigerians to stop holding governors responsible for security challenges in their states, noting that, though they're called the chief security officers, governors lack the authority to command the security agencies.

The governor said these during a media chat in Katsina on Friday, October 20, 2023. He called on the Federal Government to assume a more critical role in securing lives and property in the county.

"If a bandit can go to the market and buy AK-47, RPG, and all of those weapons, what of the people that want to protect themselves? They too should equally be allowed to do so. These people are holding it illegally, we are trying to hold it legally. Why can’t the government allow the people to hold this thing and equally confront the challenges?” he queried.

Radda noted that his administration has explored legal means in establishing a ‘community watch corps’ that will complement the military’s efforts in the fight against banditry in the state.

He stated that bandits are hardened criminals who must be eliminated in Katsina and that his administration would spare no effort in ensuring that the criminals are crushed.

Radda also disclosed that some traditional rulers in the state were under probe over their alleged involvement with bandits, stressing that whoever was found to be in cahoot with the criminals would be made to face the wrath of the law no matter how highly placed.

“There are some traditional rulers who are identified and those ones are already under scrutiny. So, we are not sparing anybody even commissioners in my regime, we are not going to spare anybody found to be involved in one criminal activity or the other" the governor stated.

Haaaaaa 3rd World War in the making.
This governor meant well for the protection of innocent citizens.
I'm proud of him. In my own opinion. This would turn Nigerian streets to battle fields. I think the best solution would be to destroy the source of weapon procurement for these bandits.
Their source of purchase must be investigated and blocked. Serious measure should be taken to ensure these bandits don't have access to these dangerous AK 47 and Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG)
Imagine if every citizen is allowed to carry weapon:
* Cultists would have a field day attacking rival groups without provocation.
* Hot tempered husband would just shoot his wife dead. At any slightest act of provocation.
* Armed robbers would kill their target at first sight. It'll be first attack because he'll have it in his mind that his target also have gun in his/her possession.
* Parks and garages touts would shoot any driver that refused to pay the union tax or levy.
* A policeman could be shot by any driver who doesn't have the vehicle documents to show on demand. He'll use this weapon as his means of escape.
This list is endless. I think the only way would be to stop illegal importation and procurement of arms.
Also, any Fulani herdsmen that carry AK47 should be arrested and made to disclose his source of procurement.
Herdsmen should revert back to long staff to herd their flocks.

No, they should not due to the law of unintended consequences. In a society where people suffer from physical and mental poverty, most of those weapons would eventually end up in the hands of a few rich individuals and powerful groups who will end up hijacking the society and turn it into a no go wild west like Haiti, Mexico and Afghanistan. Remember, the road to Hell is often paved with good intentions. Rather than arm civilians, the Govt needs to strengthen our security forces and enact very strict penal laws with zero tolerance against crimes of any kind.
