Themed "Tech Nexus: Beyond the lines of Code", the event recognized Non technical individuals playing pivotal role in Tech industry across Africa. Tina Okonkwo was honored for her exceptional contributions to the field and underscores her dedication to the data analytics community.
A mathematics graduate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Tina during a press engagement noted that she transitioned into data analytics through persistent learning and hands-on experience. After completing the IBM Data Science program and switching to the #I4GDatacamp Scholarship, she secured a role as a Data Analyst within four months.
Upon receiving the award, she expressed her joy and a sense of accomplishment, considering it both a personal validation and a professional milestone. "This award is not just a recognition of my skills but also a testament to the potential of data analytics in transforming industries."
One of Tina's notable projects involved collaborating with a local non-profit, empowering them with data analysis skills to track program effectiveness. According to her, "Witnessing their transformation from data novices to empowered decision-makers using insights gleaned from their own data was truly rewarding."
As a young female professional in a traditionally male-dominated field, she recalled facing moments of underestimation but overcame them by seeking mentors, continuous skill development, and contributing meaningfully to the community.
She emphasized the importance of encouraging more young women to pursue careers in data analysis and tech, advocating for diversity to foster innovation.
"To aspiring data analysts, especially young women, i would like to encourage them to be relentless in pursuit of knowledge, embracing challenging projects, networking, and leveraging the power of community.
"Most importantly, believe in your abilities and don’t let gender stereotypes deter you from achieving your goals", she added
Tina stated that she stay updated with industry trends by attending
conferences, webinars, online communities, and research on publications like Towards Data Science.
Looking ahead, she envisions leading innovative projects that utilize big data to address real-world challenges. She further revealed her plans to mentor and support aspiring data analysts, particularly young women, fostering a future where data analytics contributes to solving critical issues in various industries.
