A 30- year-old security man, Obinna Ezealo of Old Karmo Abuja, yesterday told an Abuja Magistrate Court that hardship and temptation made him pretend to be a Muslim convert in order to raise money from mosques in Abuja.
Obinna, who was convicted for cheating, was said to have disguised as a new convert into the Muslim faith and went to two mosques in Abuja were he solicited for funds before his antic was discovered and he was handed over to the police.
Prosecutor Abdullahi Adamu, told the court that on January 28, one Malam Adamu Ibrahim attached to Wuse Market mosque reported at the Wuse Police Station that the accused came to their mosque and pretended to be a new Muslim convert in need of money.
He said that Muslim faithful in the mosque raised N4,000 for him only for the accused to leave the mosque to another mosque where he met another Imam and tried to dupe him of some amounts, on the pretext that he wanted to convert to Islam.
He said his antics were discovered and he was handed over to the police.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, promising never to do such in his life again.
The prosecutor urged the court to try him summarily according to Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Magistrate Aminu Eri considered the convict’s leniency plea and sentenced him to two weeks imprisonment with a fine option of N1,000.
He also cautioned the convict never to engage in such crime again.
