The authorities of Nigeria have announced a scheduled date for the continuation of legal proceedings against an individual associated with a certain group, referred to as the Indigenous Assembly of Biafra (IAB). The trial is set to resume on Monday, February 26.

This decision follows a ruling by the judiciary on December 15, 2023, which granted permission to proceed with the trial on certain charges against the said individual.

An official notice has been issued for the resumption of the trial, indicating that it will take place before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Both the lead counsel representing the accused, as well as the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, have been duly notified.

Efforts have been made to ensure the presence of the accused, with communication established with the Director General of the Security Services to facilitate his appearance in court on the specified date.

The individual in question has been in the custody of the security services since June 19, 2021, following his apprehension in a foreign country and subsequent transfer to Nigeria.

While initially facing multiple charges related to terrorism, a portion of these charges was dismissed during the trial proceedings. However, the individual was instructed to defend against the remaining counts.

A significant development occurred when the Court of Appeal overturned the terrorism charges against the accused in October 2022, ordering his immediate release on the grounds of procedural irregularities.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court overturned the decision of the lower court on December 15, 2023, reinstating the trial on the remaining charges. The Supreme Court emphasized that despite the contentious circumstances surrounding the individual's return to Nigeria, legal proceedings should proceed accordingly, with any grievances to be addressed through civil channels.
