A tragic motor accident claimed the lives of at least 8 individuals at Ngibo village along the Kastina-Ala – Zakibiam road in Benue State.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, February 20, when two vehicles collided head-on while traveling from opposite directions. The mangled bodies of the occupants were extricated from the wreckage by bystanders and some security personnel.
An anonymous resident in the area asserted that the accident involved a total of 12 people, with 8 fatalities at the scene and an additional 4 succumbing to their injuries at the hospital by Wednesday.
"The involved vehicles included a commercial golf car carrying nine passengers and a private Nissan with three passengers. Unfortunately, the four individuals who sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital on Tuesday have also passed away, bringing the total death toll to 12," the resident stated.
Contrary to this account, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Benue State, Steve Ayodele, reported that the accident occurred at 12:32 pm on Tuesday along the Kastina-Ala-Zakibiam road at Ngibo village, involving only 10 individuals.
Ayodele attributed the accident to overspeeding, with one vehicle attempting to avoid a pothole, resulting in the fatal collision.
"The accident involved two vehicles and was catastrophic. Of the 10 individuals involved, eight lost their lives," Ayodele stated. "The victims included four female adults, three male adults, and one female child. Two individuals sustained injuries and were transported to Kastina-Ala general hospital for medical attention."
"It was a head-on collision; one of the vehicles attempted to maneuver around a pothole and collided with the oncoming vehicle," he added.
