The case of Ifechukwu Nweke, a 19-year-old man declared wanted by the Anambra State government for the alleged murder of 71-year-old Shedrack Okoye while masquerading in Umuawulu community, Awka South Local Government Area, is a tragic incident that has sparked outrage and demands for justice.

The incident, which occurred on December 26, 2023, saw Okoye being punched to death by Nweke after refusing to give him money while he was accompanied by a friend. This act, deemed against the state's law on masquerading enacted in 2022, is viewed as a serious violation of cultural norms and societal harmony.

The State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, emphasized the gravity of the offense, highlighting that masquerading is meant for entertainment and should not result in obstructing people's movements or causing harm to individuals.

The deceased's family, understandably grieving and seeking justice, expressed dissatisfaction with the response from the Umuawulu community and the authorities. The deceased's first son, Chidubem, recounted the tragic events leading to his father's death and the subsequent lack of progress in apprehending the suspect.

Efforts by the traditional ruler of Umuawulu, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, to mediate between the two families and ensure a proper burial for the deceased have been initiated. However, the financial constraints faced by both parties pose a challenge to resolving the matter swiftly.

The situation underscores the need for effective law enforcement and community engagement to address such crimes promptly and ensure that justice is served. The collective efforts of law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and concerned citizens are crucial in bringing the perpetrator to justice and providing solace to the grieving family.
