The Niger State Police Command has reported the demise of a suspected bandit during an operation to thwart a kidnapping attempt and rescue a victim in Borgu Local Government Area of the state. According to a statement released by Wasiu Abiodun, the police spokesperson in Niger State, the incident unfolded when certain bandits threatened to abduct a businessman in Bako-Mission village and demanded a ransom of N3 million.
In response to the threat, police operatives alongside vigilante members, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of New-Bussa Division, were swiftly deployed to the area. They engaged the bandits in a gunfight at a specified location in Tunga-Umoru village, where the ransom was to be dropped.
During the operation, the security team successfully rescued a 22-year-old female victim who had been abducted earlier. In the exchange of fire, one of the bandits was neutralized, and his AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine was recovered from the scene.
The statement further explained that while one bandit was neutralized, some others managed to escape with gunshot wounds. Efforts are currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
The prompt response and effective collaboration between law enforcement agencies and vigilante groups led to the successful thwarting of the kidnapping attempt and the rescue of the abducted victim. The Niger State Police Command commended the bravery and professionalism of the security operatives involved in the operation.
