In a statement issued on Thursday, the Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere called on the President Bola Tinubu-led government to temporarily permit the importation of essential food items to address the growing hunger in the country. The statement, issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, expressed concern over the increasing hardship faced by Nigerians.
Ajayi emphasized that the president should ensure the importation of staple food and other essential items to "bridge the wide gap in food supply in the country." However, he suggested that such importation should only be for a short period, suggesting "three to five months perhaps," to allow for local production to catch up.
The statement further outlined additional measures to tackle food scarcity, including opening food storages across the country and facilitating crash agricultural productions in all 774 local government areas, covering various aspects such as crops and livestock. This approach aims to ensure that when the window for food importation closes, a significant amount of local foods would be ready for harvesting.
Afenifere also stressed the importance of government assistance or encouragement for food merchants to bring down food prices considerably, thus easing the burden on the populace.
