The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated investigations into a case involving 16 suspected oil thieves and a vessel handed over to it by the Nigerian Navy, NNS Beecroft, Apapa, Lagos.
Commander L.M. Osuman, representing the Nigerian Navy, disclosed that the vessel, MT. Vinnalaris 1, was apprehended along with its crew members on December 6, 2023, around Ebesun Oil Field for allegedly being laden with approximately 515,870 litres of crude oil without proper authorization.
Highlighting the seriousness of the offense, Osuman emphasized that the vessel was actively engaged in loading crude oil without the necessary permits, indicating a clear violation of regulations.
Assuring continued efforts in combating oil theft, Osuman reiterated the Nigerian Navy's commitment to ensuring that perpetrators face the full consequences of their actions.
Upon receiving custody of the vessel and the suspects, Moses Awolusi, an investigator representing the EFCC, pledged thorough and meticulous investigation into the matter. He affirmed that if the suspects are found culpable, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The EFCC's involvement underscores the gravity of the situation and the determination of law enforcement agencies to stamp out illegal activities within the oil sector, safeguarding national resources and upholding regulatory standards.
