The Ogun State Police have reported the arrest of nine suspected cultists and individuals associated with other criminal gangs in separate operations targeting criminal hideouts in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The raids occurred in the Ita-Oshin and Mile 2 areas of Abeokuta on Thursday and Friday, respectively. One individual suspected of being part of a criminal group was apprehended in the Mile 2 area on Thursday, while eight suspected cultists and robbers were arrested in Ita-Oshin on Friday.
Among the arrested suspects are Odeyewu Samuel, Sola Adebiyu, Adeshina Michael, Segun Taiwo, Jimoh Ibrahim, Agwu Orji, Hamzat Bulama, John Jeremiah, and Quadri Raheem. Raheem was captured in the Mile 2 area, while the others were apprehended in Ita-Oshin.
According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the arrests were made following intelligence operations targeting criminal hideouts. Some of the suspects are believed to be involved in various criminal activities, including receiving stolen items.
The police operation in Ita-Oshin involved a coordinated effort between police officers, local hunters, and members of vigilante groups. The area targeted is known for harboring cultists and other criminals, making it a notorious black spot in the city.
“The suspects were also notorious for resisting arrest. Mobile phones suspected to have been stolen were recovered from them. When our men asked them for their identification at the time of the arrest, none of them could give a satisfactory answer.
“These suspects are also known for always disturbing the peace in the area. The investigation is ongoing. Those culpable will be charged in court.”
