In a recent interview on Channels Television's "Politics Today," the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, defended the salaries and allowances of federal lawmakers, stating that they are not earning enough for the tasks they undertake. He criticized proposals to slash lawmakers' salaries by 50 percent, emphasizing that the allowances are essential for carrying out the duties assigned by constituents.

Kalu clarified that the salary is distinct from allowances, which are designated for fulfilling constituents' needs and responsibilities. He emphasized that allowances are not to be misused and that there are consequences for improper usage.

Addressing concerns about lawmakers' salaries, Kalu argued that the current remuneration is inadequate considering economic realities such as inflation rates and the cost of living. He highlighted the expenses incurred by lawmakers in running constituency offices, maintaining aides, and addressing constituents' needs.

Kalu expressed a willingness among lawmakers to adjust their salaries if it would benefit the country, acknowledging that lawmakers are elected representatives accountable to their constituents. He emphasized the importance of constructive discussions to address the challenges facing Nigeria rather than focusing solely on salary adjustments for lawmakers.

I agree. Let’s pay them 1m per day, or baba how much una want? Make we pata pata give una blank cheques to fill in any amount una want. Thieves. I recommend we adopt unicameral approach, and scrap HORs chambers. How about that???
