The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decided to suspend its nationwide protests after achieving the objectives set for the first day of the demonstration. This decision was made during the National Executive Council meeting of the NLC.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the NLC stated that the protest had achieved overwhelming success on its first day, leading to the decision to suspend street action for the second day.

The protests were organized in response to various economic challenges facing Nigeria, including rising inflation, food inflation, forex crisis, and economic hardship exacerbated by the removal of petrol subsidy.

Despite last-minute talks between the Presidency and labour leaders on Monday night, the NLC proceeded with the protests. Labour leader Joe Ajaero emphasized that the protests were driven by concerns about hunger and the need for a review of the minimum wage.

While the street action has been suspended for the second day, nationwide action will continue with simultaneous press conferences across all states by the state councils of the Congress, including the National Headquarters.

The NLC has extended its ultimatum to the government by another 7 days, expiring on March 13, 2024. During this period, the government is expected to implement previous agreements reached on October 2, 2023, and address other demands presented during the nationwide protest.

If the government fails to comply with the demands within the extended ultimatum, the NLC will convene to decide on further lines of action.
