The Senate has called on the federal government to adopt the food stamp measure as an intervention to alleviate the hardship and high cost of living experienced by Nigerians. This decision was reached during the plenary session on Tuesday, following the adoption of a motion presented by Senate Whip, Ali Ndume, and Senator Saliu Mustapha of Kwara Central.

The food stamp initiative entails the provision of food-purchasing assistance by the federal government to low and non-income individuals, aimed at ensuring adequate nutrition and health. Mr. Ndume emphasized the necessity of introducing food stamps to help Nigerians cope with challenges such as inflation, escalating food prices, and economic hardships exacerbated by ongoing conflicts and climate change impacts.

He cited the example of the United States, where food stamps have been in use since 1933 as a measure to mitigate the sufferings of low-income and non-income individuals. Mr. Ndume stressed that advocating for wage increases alone cannot address the prevailing hunger and hardship in the country, emphasizing the importance of implementing the food stamp program.

During the debate, all senators expressed support for the motion, highlighting the potential effectiveness of food stamps in addressing hunger and poverty. Minority Leader Abba Moro and Senator Sadie Umar emphasized the need for the federal government to approve and implement the food stamp approach, ensuring its accessibility to vulnerable individuals and households.

Senator Sani Musa underscored the positive impact of food stamps, echoing the sentiments of his colleagues. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin commended Senator Ndume for initiating the motion, emphasizing its potential to control inflation and mitigate the high cost of living in the country.
