The city of Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States, has formally declared March 2nd as “Burna Boy’s Day” to honor and commemorate the Nigerian musician.

This proclamation was made through an official document from the Boston City Council, signed by Councillor Ruthzee Louijeune.

The document recognizes Burna Boy for his exceptional performances and advocacy efforts.

It highlights Boston’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity through various events, festivals, and community initiatives, acknowledging Burna Boy’s contributions as emblematic of this commitment.

Therefore, it resolves that March 2, 2024, shall be officially recognized as Burna Boy Day in the City of Boston.

“Through his performances and advocacy work, Burna Boy amplifies the voices of marginalized communities and advocates for their recognition and rights, using his platform not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire, starting conversations about social justice, equity, and representation,” the letter reads in part.

Quote
“Nigeria is the largest source of African immigration in the United States and Massachusetts is one of the top 10 states with the highest Nigerian-born population, according to the American Community Survey.

“Boston’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating culture and diversity is evident in the range of cultural events, festivals, and community initiatives that showcase the city’s multicultural landscape; and

“Burna Boy’s legacy serves as a reminder of possibility, reminding us to continue amplifying voices that have long been silenced or overlooked; Now, therefore be it.

“That March 2, 2024, is designated Burna Boy Day in the City of Boston.”

Burna Boy has consistently drawn large audiences to his sold-out shows in Boston since gaining international prominence in 2018.

The singer started to attract attention in 2013 after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E’.

In 2021, Burna Boy set a record in Nigeria after his fifth album ‘Twice As Tall’ won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards.
