Heartbreak engulfed the Onipanu area of Lagos State as a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, identified as Sunday Bukola, reportedly crushed a five-year-old boy named Malik to death at Palmgroove. The harrowing incident, which occurred around 1:30 pm on Saturday, sent shockwaves through the community, leaving residents reeling with grief and disbelief.

According to eyewitness accounts gathered by Punch Metro, the tragic accident unfolded as Malik, accompanied by his mother and younger brother, attempted to cross the BRT lane. In a devastating turn of events, the speeding bus struck the innocent family, leaving Malik fatally injured and his sibling and mother with varying degrees of injuries.

"The bus driver hit the deceased, his mom, and his brother. Their names are Malik, aged 5 years old, and Basit, who is two years old," a police source revealed, detailing the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the accident.

Despite efforts to rush the victims to the hospital, young Malik succumbed to his injuries on the spot, while his mother, Rofiat, and brother, Basit, were admitted for medical treatment, battling the aftermath of the tragic collision.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the driver responsible for the fatal accident had been apprehended and was currently in police custody. An ongoing investigation aims to unravel the circumstances leading to the heartbreaking loss of young Malik's life.

"The corpse has been evacuated and deposited at the mortuary. The driver was later arrested and is in police custody, and an investigation is ongoing," Hundeyin stated, highlighting the swift action taken by law enforcement authorities in response to the tragic incident.
