The hike in the price of cement in Ibadan, Oyo State, has had a devastating impact on artisans, labourers, and suppliers in the construction industry, leaving many jobless and their businesses struggling to survive.

Artisans and unskilled labourers have spoken out about the dire situation, with many expressing frustration and desperation as they find themselves out of work. Mr. Sunday Odeh, a bricklayer, shared his experience of being unable to continue working on a project due to the sudden increase in cement prices. This has led to a temporary halt in construction activities, leaving workers like Odeh with no source of income.

Similarly, Mrs. Ayoka Alani, who relied on daily labour at construction sites, lamented the lack of job opportunities since the hike in cement prices. Many site engineers can no longer afford to purchase cement and other materials, resulting in a decline in demand for labourers like Alani.

The situation has also affected suppliers like Mr. Andrew Ayodele, a block moulder, whose business has suffered due to low patronage resulting from the increased cost of cement. With block prices on the rise, customers are hesitant to make purchases, further exacerbating the financial strain on Ayodele's business.

Even tipper drivers like Mr. Bamidele Aina have felt the impact, as the overall slowdown in construction activities has led to reduced demand for sand and gravel.

The widespread repercussions of the cement price hike underscore the interconnectedness of various sectors within the construction industry. As stakeholders grapple with the economic challenges posed by the soaring cost of building materials, the need for swift intervention to alleviate the plight of those affected becomes increasingly urgent.
