French lawmakers voted 780-72 on Monday to approve a bill making abortion a constitutional right for women in the country. France thus becomes the first country in the world to guarantee freedom of abortion for women.

President Emmanuel Macron had advocated for enshrining abortion as a women's right in the French constitution. The new amendment allows the law to determine the conditions under which women can access abortion, ensuring its guarantee.

Following the vote, Macron invited members of the French parliament to a special meeting at the Palace of Versailles in Paris.

The bill had garnered significant support from the lower house of France's National Assembly in January. Despite opposition from right-wingers in the parliament, about 85 percent of the French population supports the bill.

Discussions on the constitutional review of abortion rights were sparked after the United States Supreme Court restricted abortion rights in 2022.

Critics argue that abortion rights are not a constitutional matter. However, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal emphasized the importance of the bill, stating that women's right to abortion has been "in danger and at the mercy of decision-makers." He added, "The era of a world of hope is starting."

The constitutional amendment marks the 25th review of the document by the French parliament.
