Tragedy struck Abacheke, a community nestled within the Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, as gunmen unleashed terror, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing events to PREMIUM TIMES, revealing that the assailants launched their attack on Friday evening, plunging the community into chaos and fear.
According to a resident who preferred anonymity for security reasons, the armed assailants stormed Abacheke aboard three motorcycles, their faces concealed behind masks and clad in military attire.
“They were many. But I can’t say the exact number. They were wearing army uniforms and facemasks,” the source recounted, highlighting the brazenness of the attackers.
Confirming the tragic incident, Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed that the armed hoodlums struck around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, targeting unsuspecting youths in the community.
“In a swift response, the area commander in charge of Ohaji-Egbema and other tactical teams mobilised to the scene, the victims were immediately rushed to the hospital where four were confirmed dead on arrival while one is currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital,” Okoye stated.
Expressing outrage over the senseless violence, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, condemned the heinous act, vowing to apprehend the perpetrators.
“The Commissioner of Police Imo State Command, Aboki Danjuma, has condemned in totality the gruesome murder of four young men at Abacheke Community in Ohaji-Egbema by gunmen who were dressed in military camouflage,” Okoye reiterated.
In the wake of the tragedy, the police urged residents of Imo State to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by providing vital information that could aid in the apprehension of the gunmen.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the incident adds to the growing concerns surrounding insecurity in the state and the broader South-east region.
Although some previous incidents have been associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the group has consistently denied involvement in violent activities, reiterating its commitment to peaceful agitation for the secession of the South-east from Nigeria.
