Anambra: SSS takes over interrogation of corps members, others

The State Security Service has taken over the interrogation of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s ad registration officers arrested for various electoral offences in Anambra State on Sunday.


The Public Relations Officer of INEC, Mr. Frank Egbo, said in a statement in Awka, the state capital, on Monday that the number of the suspects was 28.


He said the 28 suspects were arrested in Dunukofia Local Government Area following a report by the Electoral Officer for the area, Mrs. Nkechi Enemuoh.


Egbo said, “The arrest of the registration officials, all ad-hoc workers, recruited by INEC for the 2011 voter registration exercise in Dunukofia Local Government Area of the State, followed a report by the Electoral Officer of the area Mrs. Nkechi Enemuoh.


“The arrested ad-hoc workers comprised of 16 males (eight corps members and eight non corps members) and 12 females (five corps members and seven non corps members).


“All those arrested are being interrogated by men of the SSS for varied alleged offences, ranging from registering persons without their finger thumb prints being scanned into the Direct Data Capture machine, doing voter registration with imported photos from telephone cameras and also registering under-aged person.”


Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhtari Ibrahim, has said that six of the 19 people the police arrested for electoral offences have been charged to court.


Ibrahim stated this on Monday at a press briefing in Awka where he paraded 15 armed robbery and kidnap suspects.


He said that three of the electoral offenders were released while the rest were still being investigated.
