In a significant crackdown on illicit oil activities, the Nigerian Navy has revealed the dismantling of 16 illegal refineries with a staggering capacity to refine 9.6 million litres of crude oil. The operation, conducted around the Elem-Krakama community in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, marks a major victory in the fight against oil theft and illegal refining activities plaguing the region.
The discovery, announced in a statement, was made by the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Pathfinder, on Wednesday, April 3. During the operation, 14 suspects, including one woman, were apprehended at the illegal refining site.
The suspects were allegedly operating an intricate network, utilizing a 14-inch pipe to siphon over 210 metric tonnes of crude oil from wellhead 15 within OML18, operated by NNPC Ltd.
Commander NNS Pathfinder, Commodore DOC Igbo, revealed the magnitude of the operation, stating, "We uncovered 16 cooking pots within this illegal refining site, and each of them contains about 600 thousand litres, which is quite huge. They were tapping right from the oil wellhead belonging to NNPC Ltd."
Despite engaging with community leaders and chiefs, Igbo emphasized that the illegal activities persisted, affirming the Navy's unwavering commitment to curbing such practices. "The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has mandated us, and we are not deterred," he declared.
Following the arrests, the 14 suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and prosecution on Thursday, April 4.
The bust serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against oil theft and illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and collaborative efforts to safeguard Nigeria's natural resources and economic interests.
