In a concerted effort to address the plight of Nigerian irregular migrants stranded in Libya, the Federal Government has successfully evacuated 138 individuals back to the country.

The announcement came through a statement issued by Amb Kabiru Musa, Chargé D’Affaires En Titre of the Nigerian Mission in Libya, on Tuesday in Abuja. According to Musa, the evacuees departed from the Mitiga International Airport aboard a chartered flight, UZ 189, on Tuesday afternoon, destined for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Among the returnees were 77 males, 56 females, 11 children, and four infants, reflecting the diverse demographic of those affected by irregular migration. This evacuation marks the fourth exercise conducted by the Nigerian Mission in Libya this year, aligning with the government's commitment to repatriating stranded citizens under the 4D foreign policy directive.

Musa highlighted the collaborative efforts with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya, emphasizing the importance of the Voluntary Humanitarian Repatriation (VHR) programme in facilitating the safe return of Nigerians. He also acknowledged the assistance provided by Libyan authorities in releasing and repatriating migrants held in detention facilities for immigration-related offenses.

Expressing concern over the dangers of irregular migration, particularly among young Nigerians, Musa urged caution and emphasized the risks involved in seeking greener pastures through perilous journeys.

Upon their arrival in Nigeria, the evacuees will be received by relevant government agencies responsible for their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Musa reassured the commitment of Nigerian authorities to providing consular assistance and support to citizens in distress abroad, reaffirming the government's dedication to addressing migration challenges comprehensively.
