The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed disappointment over the region's support for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections, suggesting a shift in voting strategy for future elections.
During a Tuesday interview with Guardian, NEF spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman conveyed the region's regret over its choice in the 2023 presidential election and indicated a move towards greater unity and consensus in selecting future presidential candidates, particularly for the 2027 general elections.
Suleiman emphasized the importance of learning from the 2023 experience, stating, “The North realizes the error in choosing Bola Tinubu for the presidency in 2023. This experience has taught us the importance of selecting a leader who embodies unity and serves the best interests of all Nigerians.”
He further mentioned that in future elections, the Northern region would exercise more caution in its selection process, seeking a candidate who is perceived as inclusive, uncontroversial, and representative of the entire nation's interests.
President Bola Tinubu, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured significant support from the Northern region, outpacing key rivals including Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who hails from the North.
However, since taking office in May 2023, President Tinubu has faced criticism for implementing policies viewed by some as unfavorable to the masses. Additionally, Northern groups have raised concerns over what they describe as unequal appointments within the federal government by his administration.
