The concerns raised by some Northern leaders regarding the potential relocation of US and French military bases to Nigeria reflect a broader apprehension about the implications such a move could have on the country's security, economy, and environment.

Their caution about the rise in terrorism since the US began its operations in the region underscores the complexity of the security situation and the need for a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond military interventions.

Moreover, their worries about the economic and environmental impacts of hosting foreign military bases are valid. Diverting resources away from critical areas like education and healthcare towards maintaining these installations could indeed hinder Nigeria's economic growth and exacerbate existing challenges such as poverty.

The environmental concerns highlighted, including deforestation, soil erosion, and water contamination, are significant. It's essential to consider the long-term implications of such environmental degradation on agricultural communities and indigenous populations.

Additionally, the potential strain on relations with neighbouring French countries is a legitimate concern. Nigeria's strategic location in the Gulf of Guinea makes it a focal point for regional security dynamics, and any decisions regarding military cooperation should be made with careful consideration of their broader implications.

Ultimately, the decision to allow the relocation of foreign military bases should be carefully weighed, taking into account not only immediate security concerns but also the long-term implications for Nigeria's development and regional relations.

Signatories to the letter included Abubakar Mohammed of the Centre for Democratic Development, Research and Training (CEDDERT); Kabiru Chafe, former minister of state for petroleum resources, from the Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP); Attahiru Jega, former chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); Jibrin Ibrahim of the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD); Auwal Musa (Rafsanjani) of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CCISLAC); and YZ Ya’u of the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD).

If Nigeria cant have a military base in the US, I reject them having one in my country. That said, we all know that the reasons given in the writeup are not the real reason's why those northern insecurity merchants are kicking against it.

The northerners are gaining immensely from the Fed on terrorism and insecurity otherwise why will they kick against a group that will ultimately ensure there is sanity within Nigeria and her border? What have we to lose if they come? Then what have we to gain? I say more secured north, security for her people around there and this is important for the US to prevent the Asia/Russia from taking over Africa. US Military base was in Germany for years on end, that didn't disrupt their economy or cause erosion....the idiots.
