In a tragic incident, two women lost their lives after being struck by lightning during a rainstorm in the FESTAC area of Lagos State.

The news was confirmed by Lagos State Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a post on his X handle (@benHundeyin) on Saturday. According to Hundeyin, the lightning strike occurred on Friday during heavy rain.

"Somewhere on First Avenue, FESTAC, two women remained indoors during the downpour yesterday. Lightning struck, electrocuting them instantly and causing a fire outbreak," Hundeyin stated.

The women were residing in a shanty constructed beneath high-voltage power lines. The police spokesman expressed condolences, saying, "Our hearts go out to the deceased, and we pray that their souls rest in peace."

Authorities are urging residents to avoid taking shelter in unsafe structures during storms, especially those located under high-voltage wires, to prevent such tragic occurrences.
