Ogar Solomon Ogar, a notable Nigerian publisher, has publicly condemned the excessive alcohol consumption at the funeral of a man who had struggled with illness and financial difficulties before his untimely death in Okuku, Yala LGA.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Solomon revealed that during the man's desperate search for funds to cover his medical treatment, no assistance was forthcoming. Yet, after his passing, a sum of ₦1.7 million was raised for his funeral and his son's education.
"A vibrant young man of 45, full of life and energy, died a painful and unfortunate death," Solomon wrote. "He had many dreams and ambitions but succumbed to life's pressures while searching for money. Sadly, we lost him, leaving behind a son studying at the University of Cross River State."
Solomon expressed frustration over the community's sudden generosity after the man's death, highlighting the discrepancy between the lack of support during his life and the funds raised posthumously.
"When he needed money for treatment, none was available. But after his death, we raised ₦1,785,000 for his funeral and his son's education, accompanied by a fanfare of alcohol consumption," Solomon lamented.
He criticized the transformation of funerals into social events centered around loud music, partying, and excessive drinking, rather than mourning and supporting the bereaved family. "It is sickening to see people twerking and consuming alcohol instead of consoling the grieving parents," he wrote.
Solomon urged a reevaluation of priorities, questioning why significant amounts are spent on alcohol at funerals rather than on the healthcare needs of the living or an educational trust fund for the deceased's son.
"This nonsense has to stop," he declared, advocating for a cultural shift towards more meaningful support for those in need while they are still alive.
