In the early hours of Wednesday, a passenger train traveling between Kaduna and Abuja derailed, leaving numerous passengers stranded and causing widespread concern.
The train, carrying an unknown number of passengers, derailed at an unspecified location along its route, leading to confusion and panic among the relatives of those on board who are anxiously seeking information about their loved ones' safety.
A relative of one of the passengers, Aishat Ado, shared her distress with PUNCH Online, stating that her sister had called to inform her about the derailment but was unable to specify her location before the call was abruptly cut off. "My sister just called me and said their train had derailed but she could not mention her location before her phone went off. I tried calling her back several times, but the phone seems off," Ado said.
When contacted, Yakub Mahmood, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Railway Corporation, declined to provide immediate comments, insisting that an official press statement would be released later in the day. When asked about the condition of the passengers, Mahmood responded, "Please wait for the statement, my brother."
The derailment has raised significant safety concerns and the need for prompt action to ensure the passengers' well-being and quick restoration of normal service on the busy route. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
