The Customs Area Comptroller of the Sokoto/Zamfara Command, Kamal Mohammed, has commended his officers for their integrity in rejecting a ₦1.5 million bribe after apprehending three suspects involved in railway track vandalism.

In a statement shared on the agency's X handle, Mohammed detailed the operation, revealing that the suspects are part of a notorious cartel specialized in railway vandalism.

"On June 8, our officers intercepted a 20-footer truck loaded with vandalized railway tracks and apprehended three suspects. When they couldn't provide evidence from the Federal Ministry of Transport, they attempted to bribe our officers with ₦1.5 million, including an advance cash offer of ₦300,000," Mohammed stated. "Out of patriotism and integrity, the officers chose the path of honour by detaining them at the command headquarters."

He further emphasized the collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the agency responsible for securing critical national assets. "In line with the CGC's policy of collaboration, the Area Command will hand over the suspects, the truck and its contents, and the ₦300,000 cash to the NSCDC Sokoto Command for further investigation and prosecution," Mohammed added.

This incident underscores the commitment of customs officers to uphold national integrity and combat criminal activities despite the challenges and temptations they face.
